Great Leaders are Polite

I read the Declaration of Independence today and I was struck with how polite it is, not just for a call to revolution, but polite for any context or purpose. 


"When ... it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume... the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature... entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to separation". And then it goes on to list the grievances and what we had done to try to fix things and concludes: "We therefore... solemnly publish and declare, that these united colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states... " 

I think it shows that great leaders do not need vitriol or calumniation to make their point. I encourage everyone to read the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution also for that matter -- there is no substitute for the real thing.
